80% June 1995 / News & Views / ANSI C Anywhere
Summary: ANSI C Anywhere. Rick Grehan Some time ago, a fellow BYTE editor loaned me his notes and documents from a conference on how to retarget GCC, the GNU C++ compiler. After spending days poring over the materials, I emerged none the wiser, and simply more jealous of anyone who'd succeeded in building his or her own GCC compiler. Apparently, I didn't have the mental stamina required to accomplish this task. Then I found out about the Retargetable Software Tools from Archelon (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, (800) 387-5670).
67% January 1991 / Bits / Zen and the Art of Cache Maintenance Summary: Zen and the Art of Cache Maintenance. Proper understanding and use of the PowerPC's on-chip caches can improve an application's performance. Mike Phillip The benefits of such an approach are applicable to a wide range of programs, particularly those in which execution time is not spent primarily within a few small program loops. Consider the speedups obtained using a combination of basic block restructuring and cross-file function inlining for some well-known C applications that are part of the SPEC95 benchmark suite. The Gnu C compiler (gcc) and a Lisp interpreter (li) obtained speedups of greater than 20 percent when profiling-directed feedback was used to guide function inlining and basic block placement.
63% May 1994 / BYTE Lab Product Report / The GCC SelectPress 600, LaserMaster Unity 1200XL-O, and NewGen ImagerPlus 12 Summary: The GCC SelectPress 600, LaserMaster Unity 1200XL-O, and NewGen ImagerPlus 12. The GCC SelectPress 600, LaserMaster Unity 1200XL-O, and NewGen ImagerPlus 12 all have a plastic security key for letter, legal, and larger-size paper. The corresponding keys must be installed in the paper tray for the paper to load properly. We found this an added nuisance when switching to different-size paper, and we worry that a misplaced key might be responsible for bringing your printing resource to a standstill. Copyright © ...
61% May 1994 / BYTE Lab Product Report / BYTE BEST: CAD And DTP Summary: BYTE BEST: CAD And DTP. While midrange lasers suffice for business memos, correspondence, and reports, desktop publishing and CAD applications require high-resolution lasers that can handle 11- by 17-inch paper. The printers we evaluated for this category represent the luxury models of their respective printer families. All come with at least 35 resident PostScript fonts and at least 4 MB of memory. The Compaq PageMarq 20 and the GCC SelectPress 600 cater to PC users with PCL 5 support.
52% May 1994 / BYTE Lab Product Report Summary: May 1994 / BYTE Lab Product Report. Head To Head: 71 Printers. The Best Printers For General Business. For best combination of speed and quality. .. Need good performance for under $1000?
47% November 1994 / BYTE Lab Product Report / The Best Printers For General Business Summary: The Best Printers For General Business. If your print jobs typically consist of text and some graphics for correspondence, reports, and other business documents, the laser printers we rank here will serve you well. The predominant resolution for these lasers is 600 dots per inch; only the under-$1000 ``personal'' lasers we ranked in this category still print 300-dpi output. While 6- and 8-ppm print engines once were the standard for laser printers, all the products we ranked for Best Overall are rated at 10 or 12 ppm. These faster engines, when teamed with high-clock-speed processors, translate into significantly faster performance.
37% August 1995 / Core Technologies / Novell Builds a NEST Summary: Novell Builds a NEST. Novell Embedded Systems Technology makes NetWare portable and embeddable. Salvatore Salamone Novell has a vision called pervasive computing. It includes a goal of 1 billion devices connected to NetWare networks by the year 2000. This is an ambitious goal because there are only 40 million NetWare nodes (give or take a few million) currently deployed worldwide.
34% October 1996 / Web Project / Web Surveys Summary: Web Surveys. Helpful techniques for Web-based data collection and analysis. Jon Udell The BYTE Site is, among other things, a giant survey application. Each of its 6000+ archive pages presents a link to a feedback form. Or rather, as I explained last October (http://www.
